After dinner, we went downtown for a walk. The illuminated streets slept with their red and green makeup on, and few people were about. In the orange-lit cathedral, hymns and prayers rang as people gathered for the Christmas Eve ceremony. After walking a bit, we stopped at a bridge that passes over the river. We stood side by side, fascinated by the winter night at Mystic River Park and the reflected light on the quiet water. A sense of silent isolation and family solidarity fell on the shoulders of all four of us.
