영어 이름 정하기

고민 시작. 먼저 소리. 한자로 웃음이 퍼져나간다는 뜻으로 지었던 이름이다. 그냥 Sori하면 되지만, 왠지 Sorry을 연상할 것 같고.. 아기 이름짓기 사이트(http://www.babynames.com)를 뒤졌지만, 적합한 영어이름이 떠오르지 않았다. 북한이 무서워한다는 중2의 전 단계이기 때문에 본인 의사를 존중해야만 한다. Scarlett, Violet.. 뭐 발음은 괜찮은데, 가져오는 이름마다 왜 다 색을 의미하는지 모르겠다. "소리야, 아빠가 외국인이 아니어서 영어 이름의 늬앙스를 잘 모르겠어. 그런데, 이름이 보라나 연두라는 이름을 쓰는 사람이 있고, 쓸 수는 있지만, 좀 이상하잖아. 외국얘들도 혹시 그렇게 느끼지 않을까?" 그러다가 정한 이름 Rachel. 성경의 라헬. 야곱이 사랑했던 예쁜 여자. 예전 숙대 총장 발음대로면 레이첼이 아니라 "뢔이춸" 발음이 쉽진 않은데, 뭐 괜찮다.
소명이는 원래 학교 영어수업에서 Jemma를 썼다. 왜 썼냐니 쓰기 쉬워서란다. 왠지 좀 고리타분한 느낌이다. 그랬더니 Monica를 하겠단다. 흠.. 성 어거스틴의 엄마.. 너무 old하지 않니? 이번에는 엘레나. 엘레나.. 왠지 한국 60,70년대 미군부대 근처에서 많이 불렸던 이름같다. 노래 가사에도 등장한다. 소명이의 이름은 부르심, calling을 의미한다. Callie 어떠니? 비슷한 철자에서 가져왔다. 좋아한다. 됐네.
은유는 넉넉한 은혜라는 뜻이다. 제일 쉽다. 영어수업 때도 Grace. 끝.
나는 SDA영어학원 다닐 때, Huey라고 했었다. '의미과잉'인 내 성격답게, 휴이는 쉴 休자에서 음차해 왔다. 쉼. 얼마나 좋냐? 이러면서.. 그런데, 점점 나이가 드니 이런 작명과정을 설명하기도 구차하고 어설프다. "도날드 덕의 조카 있잖아요. 휴이, 루이, 듀이~"라고 말하는게 차라리 낫다. 백만년의 고민 끝에 Allen으로 정했다. 뭐, 의미는 없다. 너무 길지도 짧지도, 어렵지도 쉽지도 않고 좋잖아. 앨런.
아내는.. 백만 1년의 고민 끝에 아직도 못정했다. 미국 살다 온 교회 언니가 추천을 해줬는데도 못 고르겠다. 원래 집안에서 부르는 이름이 지혜이니, Sophia나 Sophie 정도면 적당할 것 같긴한데, 왠지 착 안붙는다. 에이~ 준비할게 태산인데, 이깟 이름 정하는게 뭐라고. ㅋㅋ

Koreans can’t speak well, however no problem.
