정말 오랜만에 꺼내보게 된 학부 때 교과서를 참고했다. Clinical Psychology, 7th EditionREBT에서는 우리가 가질 수 있는 비합리적 신념들에 대해서 다음과 같이 이야기한다.

첫째, 나는 내가 만나는 모든 사람에게 인정이나 사랑을 받아야 한다.
둘째, 나는 완벽할 정도로 유능하고 합리적이며 가치 있고 성공한 사람으로 인식되어야 한다.
셋째, 나쁘고 사악하며 악랄한 사람은 비난과 벌을 받아 마땅하다.
넷째, 내가 원하는 대로 일이 되지 않는 것은 내 인생에서 큰 실패를 의미한다.
다섯째, 불행은 내가 통제할 수 없는 상황에 의해 발생한다.
여섯째, 위험하거나 두려운 일이내게 일어나 큰 해를 끼칠 것이 항상 걱정된다.
일곱째, 어떤 난관이나 책임은 부딪혀 해결하기보다는 피하는 게 더 쉽다.
여덟째, 나는 어느 정도는 다른 사람에게 의존해야 하며, 나를 돌봐 줄 수 있는 사람이 주위에 있어야 한다.
아홉째, 과거의 영향은 결코 사라지지 않으며 과거의 경험과 사건은 현재 내 행동을 결정한다.
열째, 나는 다른 사람의 문제가 고통을 나 자신의 일처럼 아파해야 한다.
열한째, 모든 문제에는 완벽한 해결책이 있으므로 그 해결책을 찾아야 한다.
열두째, 나의 가치와 평가는 내 성과와 사람들이 나를 인정하는 정도에 의해 결정된다.
위의 내용들이 비합리적 신념이라 하는데, 가만히 곱씹어 보면 현대사회에서 우리는 저 비합리적인 신념들에 꽤 많이 물들어 있는 모습이 보이지 않는가.
그리고 위의 비합리적 신념들을 영어원서를 통해 읽게 되면 "must"와 "should"가 많은 빈도로 등장한다. 위의 신념들에 대해서 "must"의 논리를 주장했던 극단적인 과거의 분단과 전쟁의 사례들이 있지 않았던가.
REBT에서는 사람이 실수할 수 있다는 것을 인정하고, 계속 실수를 하면서도 더 평화롭게 사는 것을 배워감으로써 자신과 타인을 수용하는 것을 주장하고 있다. 개인의 합리적 삶을 강조하는 인지적 관점뿐만 아니라 실존적 존재를 있는 그대로 수용하는 것을 강조하는 인본주의적 관점 또한 취하고 있다. 이로 인해 개인이 경험하는 어려움의 기저에는 인지가 우선적으로 작용한다고 가정하는 이론이다.
그렇다면 우리가 이런 비합리적인 신념의 인지구조를 어떻게 변화시켜 볼 수 있을까?
물론 REBT에서 접근하는 방식이 있다.
(1) 사건이 발생하고, 그에 대한 (2) 비합리적인 신념을 식별하고 이에 대한 (3) 논리적 검토과정을 거친 후 (4) 감정과 행동을 개선시키는 것을 목표로 하는 것이다. 이 과정에서 개인을 더 (5) 긍정적으로 수용하고 자기 존중감을 증진시키게 된다.
이 과정은 상담사와 함께 진행할 수 도 있고, 자신에게 있었던 특정 사건을 정리해 보는 과정을 통해 정리해 보고 체득해 보는 과정을 연습해 볼 수 있다.
아래 내용은 소크라테스 문답법에 따라, 우리의 비합리적 신념이 자동적으로 생성되는 경우, 이를 수정하기 위해 스스로에게 질문을 하고 답해 보는 과정이다.
논리적 논박: 그 생각이 논리적으로 맞는가?
대안적 논박: 그 사건에 대안적인 해석은 무엇인가? 다른 식으로 바라볼 수 없는가? 최선의 대안은 무엇인가? 다른 카지노 쿠폰에게 당신의 생각을 말한다면 그들은 뭐라고 말할까?

REBT advocates acceptance of ourselves and others by recognizing that we can make mistakes, and by learning to live more peacefully while continuing to make mistakes. It takes a cognitive perspective that emphasizes rational thought, but also a humanistic perspective that emphasizes acceptance of one's existential being as it is. As a result, the theory assumes that cognition is at the center of the individual's difficulties.
