글을 쓰는 건 그림을 그리는 것과 다르지 않다. 새하얀 도화지 위에 연필로 쓱쓱 밑그림을 그린 뒤 수채물감이나 유채 물감으로 다른 모양들을 채워나가는 것은 마치 텅 빈 종이에 개요나 간단한 생각을 짤막하게 적거나 브레인스토밍을 한 뒤 제대로 된 글을 적어 내려가는 것과 같다. 짧은 메모들이 모여 큰 글의 토대가 되듯이 작은 스케치와 낙서, 크로키를 발판으로 장대한 벽화를 만들어낸다.
그림을 그릴 적에 나는 상상화를 그리는 것을 어려워했고, 정물화가 편했다. 글도 마찬가지. 소설 등의 픽션을 쓴다고 생각하면 막막하다. 그냥 내 눈앞에 있는 것을 나만의 방식으로 표현해내는 것이 편하고 익숙하다.
사실 인물화, 정물화, 풍경화, 추상화… 어떠한 그림을 그리든 작가의 내면이 반영되듯이, 어떠한 글을 쓰든지 역시 작가의 생각과 신념이 드러난다. 그렇기에 자화상을 그리지 않아도, 회고록을 쓰지 않아도 작가가 드러나는 법이다.
글쓰기를 굴튀김에 종종 비교하는 무라카미 하루키의 말이 그 이유를 감칠맛 나게 설명한다.
“원고지 4매 이내로 자기 자신을 설명하는 일은 거의 불가능에 가깝죠. … 다만 자기 자신에 관해 쓰는 것은 불가능하더라도, 예를 들어 굴튀김에 관해 원고지 4매 이내로 쓰는 일은 가능하겠죠. 그렇다면 굴튀김에 관해 써보시는 건 어떨까요. 당신이 굴튀김에 관한 글을 쓰면, 당신과 굴튀김의 상관관계나 거리감이 자동으로 표현되게 마련입니다. 그것은 다시 말해, 끝까지 파고들면 당신 자신에 관해 쓰는 일이기도 합니다.”— 무라카미 하루키 잡문집, 무라카미 하루키
이처럼 글쓰기는 쌓아온 경험과 생각을 토대로 각자 앞에 놓인 공간에 자기만의 세상을 만들어 나가는 것이다. 사실 창작하지 않는 어느 사람도 매일같이 하는 일이다. 우리는 각자만의 색안경을 끼고 세상을 바라보고 있기에 말이다. 다만 창작을 하는 이들은 특정한 매개체로 이를 표현해낼 뿐이다.
붓과 펜을 든 작가는 앞에 놓인 도화지와 캔버스 안에서는 그 세계의 신이며, 빈 종이나 화면을 채워나가는 신일 수 있는 것이다. 이는 직접 해 본 사람만이 느낄 수 있는 희열이자 기쁨이다. 때로는 그 방대함과 자유에 막막해질 때도 있지만 내 안의 무언가를 표현해내었을 때의 만족감은 이에 비교할 수 없다. 직접 해보지는 못했지만 아마 음악을 만드는 것도 비슷한 과정이 아닐까 싶다.
창작이라는 것이 재능을 타고 난 이들에만 허용된, 다른 이들은 범접하지 못하거나 다가가지 말아야 하는 구역이 아니다. 그런데 사회는 창작의 성스러운 구역을 만들어내고는 그 주변에 두꺼운 벽과 높은 울타리를 쳐서 타고난 창작가와 그렇지 않은 나머지를 구분해버린다. 내가 글을 쓰는 것도, 그림을 그렸던 것도 사실 누구나 할 수 있다. 그렇기에 나는 사람들에게 글을 써보라고, 그림을 그려보라고 말한다. 아니, 그냥 마음 편히 메모하라고, 낙서하라고 말한다.
당신에게 나는 글쓰기를 권한다. 그림 그리기를 권한다. 창작을 권한다.
