진화론적인 측면에서, 카지노 쿠폰의 항상성은 먼저 감각(sensing)을 이용하였고, 점차 마음(minding)을 이용하였다. 감각이라는 비명시적 지능은 바이러스에서도 없다고 할 수 없다. 마음은 신경계의 도움을 받고, 느낌과 창의적 추론이 중요한 역할을 맡게 되면서,항상성에 미치는 영향력이 커지게 되었고, 이를 통해 카지노 쿠폰의 목적을 확장시킬 수 있었던 것이 아닐까.

And on that point, inspite of their nonliving status, we cannot deny viruses some fraction of the non-explicit variety of intelligence that animates all living organismsbeginning with bacteria. Viruses carry a hidden competence that manifests itself only once they reach suitable living terrain. (p.20)
